Phyllis Lister Brown Bio
Judge Lister Brown was elected to the 162nd Civil District Court on November 6, 2012. Prior to the winning the 162nd Civil District Court election, she was the presiding Judge for the City of Dallas Municipal Court 4. She was first appointed to the bench in June 1994 and has served as a Judge continuously until becoming a candidate for the 162nd Civil District Court. She was one of a few inaugural judges with the City of Dallas’s Community Courts and the New Life Opportunity initiative, both of which are courts designed to rehabilitate and reinvigorate communities and lives using alternative and compassionate sentencing alternatives.
Prior to taking the bench, Judge Lister Brown began her legal career with the City of Dallas and strategically worked in various legal arenas to prepare her for a Jurist position. She has worked for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, The Zale Corporation, Brown, Robinson & West, LLP and Lorenzo Brown & Associates. P.C., before founding The Lister Law Firm, a full service civil litigation firm.
Judge Lister Brown had more than 12 years of civil litigation and trial experience prior to becoming the Judge of the 162nd Civil District Court. She has represented large and small businesses, governmental entities as well as individuals in a variety of matters including commercial litigation, banking, personal injury and family. She is licensed by the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern of Texas and all Courts of the State of Texas.
Judge Lister Brown has been active in numerous professional organizations including membership in the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, the J.L. Turner Legal Association and the Texas Municipal Courts Association. She has served as Chairperson of the J.L. Turner Legal Association Foundation and formerly Vice President of the J.L. Turner Legal Association. Judge Lister Brown is a frequently requested speaker and a former faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. She is a Founding Board Member of the University Of North Texas School Of Law and has been active in a variety of social and civic organizations, including the Junior League of Dallas, Jack and Jill of America, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Girl Scouts of America and many others. Judge Lister Brown is a graduate of North Texas State University and The Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
